Privacy Policy for Yapp

Last updated: 13 September 2026

Yapp (previously Bulldog Menus) is an independent app built by a Yale student. This policy describes what the app collects, why, and what you can do about it. It is written to be read, not to be skimmed past.

An earlier version of this policy said the app collected no personal information and had no accounts. That was true when the app only showed dining menus. It is no longer true, and this version replaces it.

Who runs this

One Yale undergraduate. Contact: edmundo20061@gmail.com

Signing in

Some parts of the app (Birthdays, Jobs, buttery orders) are restricted to Yale, so they require signing in with your Yale Google account.

When you sign in we receive and store your yale.edu email address. We use it to confirm you are at Yale, to attach your buttery orders to you, and to know which directory entry is yours. We do not receive your Google password.

Google also sends us your name and a link to your Google profile photo, which are stored alongside your account. Neither is displayed anywhere in the app.

The rest of the app, dining menus and hours, works without signing in.

The student directory (Birthdays)

This is the most sensitive thing the app handles, so it gets the most detail.

Where it comes from. Names, photos, residential college, class year, major and birthday are collected from the Yale Face Book and the Yale Directory, both of which require a Yale login to view. We also hold your netid and yale.edu address, which are used to match your account to your entry and are never displayed to anyone.

We do not collect hometowns or room information. These were available and are deliberately not taken.

Who can see it. Only people signed in with a verified yale.edu account. It is not public, not indexed by search engines, and not available without a Yale login.

You did not opt in, so you can opt out. Settings has a control that removes your entry immediately, and keeps it removed when the directory is next refreshed from Yale. See “Your choices” below.

How current it is. The directory is refreshed from Yale every few days, normally between 2 and 5. If you hide fields in the Yale Face Book itself, those changes reach this app at the next refresh.

Buttery orders

If you order from a buttery, we store the items, the price, the buttery, the status, any note you add for the counter, and your email address, so staff know whose order it is and you can see your history.

If you delete your account, past orders are kept as the buttery’s own record of food it made, but your email address is removed from them so they are no longer connected to you.

Notifications

There are two kinds and they work differently.

Buttery orders. When you sign in, we store a push token for your device so we can tell you when your order is ready or has been cancelled. It is stored against your email address, so that the right phone gets the right order. We remove it when you sign out, and it is deleted when you delete your account.

Birthday reminders. These are scheduled on your phone, by your phone. No token is needed and nothing is sent to us. They keep working with no internet connection, and they stop when you unstar someone or delete the app.

You can turn notifications off at any time in your phone’s settings.

Location

The Shuttle tab can use your location to work out which stop is nearest and which shuttle gets you somewhere fastest.

Your location is never sent to our servers and is never stored. It is read on your phone, used on your phone to calculate the route, and discarded. The app asks for it only when you tap to use it, only while the app is open, and never in the background. You can decline and pick a starting point from a list instead.

Kept only on your phone

Saved birthdays, your food tracker entries, your buttery cart and your app preferences are stored on your device. Deleting the app removes them.

The one thing that leaves your phone is the list of people you have starred, which is sent each time the app asks whose birthday is coming up. It is used to answer that question and is never stored on our servers.

What we do not do

Your choices

Remove yourself from the directory. Settings, “Your directory entry”, “Remove me from Birthdays”. Your entry disappears immediately and stays gone through future refreshes.

Because the directory is a mutual arrangement, while your entry is removed you cannot browse the directory either. You can put your entry back at any time from the same screen. It returns at the next refresh from Yale, normally 2 to 5 days, and access returns straight away.

Delete your account. Settings, “Delete my account”. This deletes your sign-in, your push tokens, and your staff record if you have one, and unlinks you from past orders.

You are not blocked from coming back. Signing in again with the same Yale email creates a fresh account. The one thing that does not return is the link to your past buttery orders, which stay with the buttery but are no longer connected to you.

If you are still in the directory, you will be offered the choice to remove that at the same time, because afterwards there is no account left to prove which entry is yours. A directory removal survives account deletion, so if you come back and want to be listed again, use “Put my entry back” in Settings.

If you cannot use the app, email edmundo20061@gmail.com and we will remove your entry by hand.

Where your data is held

Children

The app is for Yale students and is not directed at children under 13.

No affiliation with Yale

Yapp is an independent student project. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Yale University. “Yale” and “Yale University” are trademarks of Yale University. Dining, shuttle, directory and job information originates from Yale and belongs to Yale.

Changes

If what the app collects changes, this policy changes with it and the date at the top is updated. Material changes will be announced in the app.
